Our Story

WORDA, Women Redevelopment and Rehabilitation Organization is a non-profit making and non-political organization engaged in the development of Somaliland communities since 1994 as a Community Based Organization (CBO), and became registered NGO in 1997.

WORDA is one of the founding members of Nagaad network, which a women network in Somaliland, and a founding member of Nafis network, which is an anti-FGC, network in Somaliland. To put women’s causes at the regional level WORDA is a member organization of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), established in 1995 as a regional network which undertakes research, capacity-building, sub-granting, and advocacy on women’s human rights.

WORDA is women-led organization that works towards changing the lives of women and amplifying their voices to claim their rights. Often times it is the women in households who are not only the primary caregivers but also the providers. Why not invest and empower women to have access to tools to succeed in life and build confidence in the pursuit of their goals. WORDA approaches this objective through advocating for human rights and justice, delivering educational programs and skills training, promoting access and participation in decision-making process.

The main office is in Hargeisa Capital City of Somaliland and six other regional operations (Maroodijeex, Awdal, Sahil, Togdheer, Sool, and Sanag).

Step - 1
Knowledge Production for Evidence-Based Advocacy and Documentation

Worda approach to knowledge production centres on creating and sharing blogs, policy briefs, statements and long form research, which is evidence based and driven by feminist narratives and women’s lived experiences to advance gender equality. It is grounded in strong ethical standards, including trauma-informed care and confidentiality. SIHA promotes feminist participatory action research using both quantitative and qualitative methods, led by women at the regional level. This amplifies women’s perspectives and experiences, driving meaningful change. Our knowledge production strategy contributes to the growth of grassroots feminist activism and original social and political movements by linking gender justice to broader social, economic, and political justice. Women and feminist

Step - 2
Advocacy, Presence, and Greater Participation in Policy Debates

Worda ability to incorporate grassroots testimonies from women’s lived realities in the East and Horn of Africa into domestic, regional, and global discourses is a key strength. SIHA also leads in sharing case documentation that would otherwise remain unavailable to the public. Its success in conducting evidence-based advocacy campaigns has enhanced its impact and visibility as a major women’s rights organization, amplifying women’s voices in international arenas. Through SIHA’s knowledge production approach, policy briefs channel obtained documentation and offer policy recommendations by comparing SIHA’s data with regional and international human rights instruments to promote

Step - 3
Movement-Building through Expansion and Support for Worda

Worda work is immersive, with staff and network members operating within their communities, grounded in collective activism. Over the past strategic period, SIHA’s membership grows significantly, diversifying its networks. Donors increasingly approach SIHA to design and implement projects instead of competing for funds. To expand its networks, diversify programming, and enhance intersectional approaches to feminism, SIHA conducts mapping activities to identify and collaborate with organizations and coalitions working on women’s rights, implementing sub-grants as needed.

Step - 4
Membership and Affiliates Capacity-Building, Convening, and Cross Learning

Worda drives an inclusive and diverse approach across its programming. It works with girls, older women, disabled women, and women from diverse ethnic, cultural, and gender backgrounds in the region. Collaborating with girls and young women is especially important given the GHoA’s youthful population and the rise of girl-led organizations. SIHA adapts its programming to ensure it is flexible, inclusive, and welcoming to diverse feminist groups and women’s communities.

Step - 5
Internal Strength, Sustainability, and Resource Management

Worda develops the organizational and technical capabilities of its staff, members, and affiliates. It supports resource mobilization, expands grassroots networks, and aids in evidence-based lobbying and campaigning.
